Physical Chemistry of Magmas
Original price was: $129.00.$103.20Current price is: $103.20.Add to cartPhysical Chemistry of Magmas investigates the properties, structure, and phase relationships of silicate melts with invited contributions from an international team of experts. Data and some rules for estimating the properties and structures of melts, as well as the implications of the physical chemistry of silicate liquids to igneous petrology, are presented. The second section then focuses on phase relationships, with particular attention on the application of experimental and theoretical petrology to modeling the origin of certain magmas.

Plant Biotechnology for Sustainable Production of Energy and Co-products
Original price was: $319.00.$255.20Current price is: $255.20.Add to cartThis book is a collection of chapters concerning the use of biomass for the sustainable production of energy and chemicals–an important goal that will help decrease the production of greenhouse gases to help mitigate global warming, provide energy security in the face of dwindling petroleum reserves, improve balance of payment problems and spur local economic development. Clearly there are ways to save energy that need to be encouraged more. These include more use of energy sources such as, among others, manure in anaerobic digesters, waste wood in forests as fuel or feedstock for cellulosic ethanol, and conservation reserve program (CRP) land crops that are presently unused in the US. The use of biofuels is not new; Rudolf Diesel used peanut oil as fuel in the ?rst engines he developed (Chap. 8), and ethanol was used in the early 1900s in the US as automobile fuel [Songstad et al. (2009) Historical perspective of biofuels: learning from the past to rediscover the future. In Vitro Cell Dev Biol Plant 45:189–192). Brazil now produces enough sugar cane ethanol to make up about 50% of its transportation fuel needs (Chap. 4). The next big thing will be cellulosic ethanol. At present, there is also the use of Miscanthus x giganteous as fuel for power plants in the UK (Chap. 2), bagasse (sugar cane waste) to power sugar cane mills (Chap. 4), and waste wood and sawdust to power sawmills (Chap. 7).

Pseudocereals and Less Common Cereals: Grain Properties and Utilization Potential
Original price was: $209.00.$167.20Current price is: $167.20.Add to cartThis book, written by leading grain scientists from Europe and Africa, examines six such grains that have been important food crops in various parts of the world and have the potential for much greater and more widespread use. The chemistry, nutritional value, food processing technologies and potential applications of three true cereals: sorghum, spelt wheat, and the major millet species, and three dicotyledonous pseudocereals: grain amaranth, buckwheat and quinoa are discussed. Just three cereal grains account for more than 75% of all grains produced worldwide. This causes high risks for the future of humankind via catastrophic food crop failures and is detrimental to our long-term health (deficiencies of micronutritients, food allergenes and intolerances). In addition, the intensive cultivation practices needed to produce the required high yields of these cereals is frequently leading to environmental degradation, and they are often inappropriate in the Developing World.

Psychiatric Genetics: Methods and Reviews
Original price was: $139.00.$111.20Current price is: $111.20.Add to cartEnthusiasm about the role that genetics plays in our understanding of behavioral phenotypes has led to the development of many new epidemiological and statistical strategies, as well as to refinements in phenotype analysis. In Psychiatric Genetics: Methods and Reviews, hands-on experts comprehensively review the tools and methods currently available to uncover the genetic basis of psychiatric disorders, and then demonstrate through archetypical examples how these strategies can be used. Casting their net widely, the authors critically examine the key methodological issues involved in phenotypic analysis-including study design, molecular techniques, clinical interviews, and population sampling methods-and discuss new and alternate strategies that identify candidate symptoms and endophenotypes with better genetic validity. These strategies suggest cognitive intermediate phenotypes in schizophrenia, show how personality disorders may generate biologically mediated traits in the full-blown disorders, and yield data about P50 and P300 as endophenotypes in schizophrenia and alcoholism. One of the most promising approaches for the identification of valid phenotypes-the union of neuropsychological experimental designs and in vivo physiological brain mapping-is also discussed.
Practical and timely, Psychiatric Genetics: Methods and Reviews lays the cornerstone for the new diagnostics in psychiatric genetics-the unraveling of the genetic basis of psychiatric disorders and the development of new therapies through the precise identification of the phenotypes involved.

Psychology and the Aesthetics of the Built Environment
Original price was: $295.00.$236.00Current price is: $236.00.Add to cartRecent legislative trends in the United States, the United Kingdom, and many other countries now require accurate and efficient assessment of environmental aesthetics. Most of this assessment is currently undertaken using traditional design judgment, but when the powers of the government are used to enforce policy the scope of the aesthetic evaluation requires consideration of …

Quantum Computing in Solid State Systems
Original price was: $199.00.$159.20Current price is: $159.20.Add to cartThe aim of Quantum Computation in Solid State Systems is to report on recent theoretical and experimental results on the macroscopic quantum coherence of mesoscopic systems, as well as on the solid state realization of qubits and quantum gates. Particular attention has been given to coherence effects in Josephson devices. Other solid-state systems, including quantum dots, optical, ion, and spin devices that exhibit macroscopic quantum coherence, are also discussed.
Quantum Computation in Solid State Systems discusses the experimental implementation of quantum computing and information processing devices and, in particular, observations of quantum behavior in several solid state systems. On the theoretical side, the complementary expertise of the contributors provides models of the various structures in connection with the problem of minimizing decoherence.
